Here’s a little tactic for helping your website get over that SERP hump.
So you website is ranking extremely well for your main keyword, yet you aren’t quite at the top of the search engines yet. For our purposes, let’s say you have a site that is ranking #2 in Google for “gold widgets”. Your main competitor just happens to rank at #1 in Google.
Maybe you’ve tried various SEO tactics like optimizing your content and site structure for SEO. Maybe you’ve read extensively on other tactics or even consulted a “SEO expert” on the matter. Most of the time a lot of people will tell you on site optimization and link building are your best friends. But what if you’ve tried everything from on site optimization to manually purchasing back links, doing link exchanges with other sites in your niche or other tactics…yet nothing has worked?
A simple solution in theory
The answer to your quandary just may lie in mimicking the back links from your competitor site.
What does that mean? That mean by utilizing Yahoo Site Explorer, Google Webmaster Tools or even some sophisticated yet simple to use priority software it’s easily possible to “scrape” the back links that point to your competitor and try to get similar back links that will point back to your site.
Ok, so maybe that doesn’t sound excessively straight forward or simple but the basic tactic is to search Google for any site that has a link to your competitor and attempting to add a link to your own site on them. That could mean using software to help automatic the process or contacting the owners of some sites to either offer reciprocal link trading or outright purchasing of a links or ad.
This is all great but exactly how does it get me ranked higher to beat my competition?
By acquiring links on the same sites as links that your competitor has links on you effectively eliminate the value of those links in Google. Google and other search engines look at different values to determine site ranking. A very big factor is links from different sites that link to or reference a site. The more links and the higher value of those links the more weight your site has in search engines and consequently the higher in search engines your site will be.
Getting similar links on the same sites as links that your competitor has will effectively neutralize those links and cancel each other out when comparing your site to your competitor site.
As I said, it sounds similar and is simple in theory but actually gaining links from sites that your competitor has links on can be and usually is a tough task that takes time.
